Keep it Short

A study of 25,080 web surveys found a direct relationship between length and response rates. Keep your questions short, concise and aim for no longer than 15 minutes to complete. Use question logic to avoid asking unnecessary questions. Ask yourself what you intend to do with the information an answer provides. The aim of a question is to help you make more informed decisions not collect information.

Multiple Choice & Checkboxes

The same 2017 study found higher response rates to multiple choice questions over open ended and other types, particularly for the first question. Avoid matrix questions as they're essentially multiple questions in one.

Showing only a single question at a time minimizes the perceived immediate effort of completing your questions. We've seen 20%+ increases in response rates by changing this single setting, which is why our online survey maker defaults to it.

No Progress Bars

The first thing a respondent will do when loading your questions is quickly scan how long it will take to complete. If you've followed the steps above and you don't display a progress bar respondents are far more likely to simply begin responding. Your goal is to make it as easy as possible for respondents to answer the questions you're asking.

Personalize your invitations and write to the vested interest of your participants. If possible, contact your participant in person to let them know you're sending an email for a serious improvement in response rates. Provide your respondents with a strong reason for taking your survey in your invitation. Let them know what you intend to do with their feedback.

Conduct Experiments

Providing you have a large enough base of potential participants test out different email titles and question design before going live to your entire distribution list. Our experience has shown that short titles like 'How did we do?' perform significantly better than longer less personal titles like 'Customer Satisfaction Questionnaire'. Progress bars also lowered response rates. Your goal in design is to make it as easy as possible for respondents to answer the questions you're asking.

Update Contacts and Send Reminders

Reminders significantly improve response rates. No more than 3 reminders, sent around a week apart appear optimal. According to Yesware's analysis of 500,000 emails the best time of day to send your email is around 6am. If possible consider following up with other mediums like phone and social media.

How do I write survey questions?

Writing good survey questions involves a number of core principles.
  • Identify your aims and avoid response bias.
  • Understand the aim of your survey and the survey participants.
  • See what's been done before by doing a quick search for similar surveys and if possible survey results.
  • Decide if your question should be open ended of closed
  • Consider the number of length of response information you're asking
  • Consider the order of your questions

How do I make a free online survey?

If you're a not for profit, student or researcher you can create a free survey by entering your questions above and hitting the share button. On the share tab enter an email and password so you can access your saved survey later on. Your first free survey is now ready to share. You can also take a look at our paid offering if you require multiple surveys.

What is an online survey?

An online survey is composed of two parts, a front-end online questionnaire and a back-end reporting system. Modern online survey creators like Super Survey allow you to add questions in a simple editor, send out a link to survey participants and automatically report on survey results. There is no software to install or complex reporting.

How do I make an online survey?

You can make an online survey by following these three steps:
  • 1. Add your survey questions using the above survey creator. Hit Add question and choose your question type.
  • 2. Change the theme and behavior of your survey by selecting the appropriate tabs. This step is optional.
  • 3. Hit the Share tab to gather a link for your survey and distribute it to participants.

How many questions should a survey have?

We suggest keeping your survey to the bare minimum and doing your best to ask no more than 10 questions. Let your participants know in your welcome email how long your survey will take to complete and why you're requesting their feedback. 55% of people will abandon surveys that take longer than 5 minutes to complete.

How to create a survey on Facebook

Facebook doesn't have it's own survey platform but most major free online survey creators like ours allow you to run your survey with a Facebook invite. Simply create your survey using our editor above, hit the Share tab and then grab the URL of your survey to post on Facebook. You'll see Facebook will automatically pick up the Survey Title as the description of the link within facebook.

How to make an email survey?

While it would be great to be able to run full surveys via email there is a very good reason you should not do it. Unlike a web browsers, email clients like gmail and hotmail rended web pages in very different ways which prevents an online survey from displaying correctly. Decent response rates are challenge without additional roadblocks like picky email clients. We suggest short, sharp survey introductions which include a link to your online survey.
